The Tetrapod Trackway was discovered in 1993 and is a very important international geological site. These tracks made up of 150 footprints are dated as having been made over 365 million years ago when the tetrapod walked on the soft flood deposits during the Devonian period. Tetrapods are described as being the first water dwelling creatures which crawled out of the water and attempted to walk on land. These tetrapods looked like large lizards and eventually evolved into mammals. There are only four known Tetrapod trackways in the world and the Valentia Island trackway is the most extensive of the four.
